IAEA not fully convinced on Iran

International Atomic Energy Agency's latest report on Iran announced that the Islamic Republic has reduced its uranium enrichment project and provided broader access to its nuclear installations. Associated Press had also reported previously that Western diplomats had confirmed Iran has not increased the number of centrifuges in Natanz nuclear plant.

However, the report expressed concern over “a number of outstanding issues” which have to be cleared before ruling out any “possible military dimensions to Iran’s nuclear program.” Iranian officials, according to the report cited by Associated Press, would only provide “limited answers and simple denials.”

The report also states that while uranium enrichment has been reduced, Iran does have the capacity to increase its production at high volume at any time.

The IAEA has also asked Iran to assure them that the Shahab3 missiles project is not connected with their nuclear program.

While Iranian authorities believe that the report reveals Iran's fulfillment of its duties vis-a-vis the international community, White House spokesman, Ian Kelly announced today that they are concerned that Iran has not extended its full cooperation to the UN watchdog.

The West fears that Iran’s nuclear activities are geared toward military aims. Iran denies this and insists that its only aim is production of electricity.

The IAEA report will be discussed in the G5+1 meeting on September 2 which could become the basis for renewed sanctions against Iran.
