Mousavi: People's opponents will leave the scene

MirHosein Mousavi

Iranian opposition leader MirHosein Mousavi issued a statement today to address the approach of November 4th, the anniversary of occupation of the US embassy in Iran and Day of the Student. The opposition and disputers of Ahmadinejad’s victory in the tenth presidential election of Iran have announced that they will stage another protest march on this day. The prospect of renewed protests has attracted the condemnation and warnings of conservative clerics and security chiefs.

In his statement, Mr. Mousavi maintains that “the opponents of the people will soon leave the scene” and once a demand is “born” within the society, no one will be able to impede its actualization.

The early street demonstrations of people in June was confronted with state violence and labeled as “riots” by the government. Consequently election protesters went on a protest march in tens of thousands on Qods Day, September 18, the day that the state was staging its annual anti-Israeli marches throughout the country.

November 4th is another date in Iranian calendar that is marked by demonstrations. Annually the state organizes anti-US demonstrations and youth marches to commemorate the takeover of the embassy and the role of youth in the 1979 Revolution.

In his statement, Mr. Mousavi congratulates Iranian people for the arrival of this day and maintains that “November 4th is a point in history that reminds us that amongst us, the people are the leaders.”
