Mousavi visits family of detained reformist, Aminzadeh

MirHosein Mousavi

MirHosein Mousavi, disputing candidate of Iran’s June presidential elections, visited and spoke with the family of Mohsen Aminzadeh, one of the prominent political actvists that has been arrested since the post-election protests to the outcome of the elections.

Iran’s former president emphasized that the people are not “rioters”, a term that the establishment has been using to describe the election protesters, and he condemned the government’s baseless accusations in this regard. The opposition leader insisted that protests will persist so long as people’s demands are not met.

Mousavi insisted that there have been “deviations” in the political, economic, cultural and social scenes of the country that need to be “reformed.”

In reference to November 4th, the day the opposition is planning to organize its own march in competition to the usual anti-US march run by the state, Mousavi claimed: “How can they claim that they are fighting against the US while the leaders of the Muslim students who took over the US embassy, such as Mirdamadi and Aminzadeh are being kept in prison. What message are they sending out?”

On November 4, 1979, a group of “Followers of Imam” University students, led by people such as Mohsen Aminzadeh and Mohsen Mirdamadi took over the US embassy in Tehran which broke Tehran-Washington relations. Since then the anniversary of this day has been celebrated in Iran with demonstrations and anti-US speeches.

Mousavi insisted that the arrests of people such as Mohsen Aminzadeh will have a “heavy cost” for the country and the regime.

Mohsen Aminzadeh, Iran’s former deputy minister of foreign affairs, was arrested on June 16. The senior member of the reformist group, Islamic Iran Participation Front, is still incarcerated.
