Former Prosecutor found responsible for deaths

Former Tehran Prosecutor, Saeed Mortazavi has been found responsible for the torture and death of election protesters at the infamous detention centre Kahrizak, according to the Parliamentary Committee report which investigated the post-election events.

Kahrizak was run by Tehran police department and in the days following the June presidential election when millions of protesters took to the streets to protest the alleged fraud that gave Mahmoud Ahmadinejad a new term, a number of the detainees were sent to this detention centre.

Reportedly the detainees were severely tortured and abused at this centre and at least three detainees were confirmed to have died as a result of torture at this centre.

Alef website, a news outlet for conservative Member of Parliament, Ahmad Tavakoli, announced today that the Parliamentary report indicates that detainees were sent to Kahrizak by the order of Saeed Mortazavi who was charged with the supervision of this detention centre by the former Head of Judiciary, Ayatollah Shahroudi.

The long awaited report was delivered to the Speaker of the Parliament, Ali Larijani, today and the Speaker will decide whether it will be publicized.

Saeed Mortazavi, who has repeatedly denied any wrongdoing, has been transferred from the judiciary to the executive branch of the government and is now head of the Task Force against Smuggling.

Earlier Mortazavi was also accused by another conservative Member of the Parliament, Alireza Zakani, of delaying the Supreme Leader’s order to close down Kahrizak.

Over the past ten years, Seed Mortazavi has been instrumental in the arrest of scores of journalists and the closure of numerous publications.

His name has also been mentioned in connection with the death of Iranian-Canadian photojournalist Zahra Kazemi who died while she was detained by Tehran’s Prosecutor’s Office.
