Iran continues prosecution of protesters

Seven more post-election detainees were indicted by Iranian authorities as the judiciary continues issuing heavy imprisonment sentences for post-election protesters.

According to ISNA, Issa Saharkhiz, Mohammadreza Rajabi, Davood Soleymani, Azar Mansouri, Mehdi Mahmoodian, Hadi Arab Ghobadi and Amirali Aghayari have had their files sent to court.

Akbar Ajdadi, who was tried in the third session of the mass trial of post-election protesters last summer, has been sentenced to over two years in prison according to Human Rights Reporters.

Ziaeddin Nabavi, a student activist and speaker for the Council of the Right to Education, has been sentenced to 15 years in prison and 74 lashes.

He was sentenced to ten years for “membership in the People’s Mojahedin Organization,” three years for “assembly and collusion to disturb national security” and two more years for “propaganda against the regime and disturbing public order.”

Ten members of the Council of the Right to Education have been arrested in the post-election crackdown on protesters and are still in prison.

Another detainee, journalist Emadeddin Baghi, who was arrested three weeks ago, informed his family in the course of a phone call that he is charged for doing an interview with the dissident cleric, Ayatollah Montazeri who passed away last month in Iran.

Iranian authorities have arrested over 5000 people in an attempt to put down the post-election protests. Several detainees have received prison sentences which range from six months to 15 years.
