An Iranian student in imminent danger of execution

International Campaign for Human Rights in Iran issued a statement announcing the imminent danger of execution for one of the Ashura Day detainees.

On Ashura day, December 27, Iranian protesters staged one of their many protests in the past nine months against the tenth presidential elections which they claim was rigged.

The Campaign maintains that “silence and failure to act effectively” by the international community will be akin to “a green light” for the execution of post election detainees.

Neday-e Sabz-e Azadi website confirmed that Mohammad Amin Valian, a twenty-year-old student, has been sentenced to death for the charge of “enmity with God.” Reportedly the sentence is based on captured images of Mohammad Amin Valian that show him throwing rocks during a protest.

The International Campaign for Human Rights urges the Head of the Judiciary to recognize that "what Valian has done can in no way be translated into the charge of enmity with God” and investigate his sentencing.

Mohammad Amin Valian is a science student at Damghan University and an executive member of the Islamic Student Association of this University. In the tenth presidential elections, he was a member of opposition leader's, MirHosein Mousavi’s headquarters in Damghan.

The Campaign reports that the student activist was not allowed to have his own lawyer and the lawyer that his parents have engaged for him has not been allowed to see his file.

In the past months, at least 13 dissidents have been handed death sentences. The International Campaign for Human Rights in Iran maintains that none of them have had access to a lawyer or “any recognized standards in judicial procedures.”

Arash Rahmanipour and Mohammadreza Zamani are two detainees who were hanged without informing their parents or lawyers.

The speaker for the Campaign maintains that there is a direct correlation between the execution sentence of Valian and the “failure of the international community” and the United Nations Human Rights Council to hold Iran accountable for its actions.

He adds: “Iran has received a clear message: You cruelty will neither illicit a serious response from the United National Human Rights Council, nor will your proposal to become a member of this Council be impeded.”

Iran has shown interest in becoming the representative of Asia in the United Nation’s Human Rights Council. The Council will meet over choosing new members in May and four members will be chosen from Asia.
