Iranian activist winner of "Women of Courage Award"

Shadi Sadr

Shadi Sadr, Iranian women’s rights activist, is amongst the winners of this year’s International Women of Courage Award.

The award is given annually to women who have shown exceptional courage in pressing for women’s rights all across the world. This year’s ten winners, which were announced yesterday by Hilary Clinton, also include Shukria Asil, an Afghan provincial council member and Shafiqa Quraishi of the Afghan Interior Ministry.

Shadi Sadr also won the Dutch “Human Rights Tulip” award and Lech Walesa human rights award last year.

Melannie Verveer, the State Department's ambassador at large for global women's issues, maintained that Shadi Sadr overcame threats, attacks and arrests in order to dedicate her life to human rights activities in Iran.

The International Women of Courage Award ceremony will take place on March 10 in the presence of Hilary Clinton in Washington.

Nothing is more urgent for Moslem women than to do whatever in their power to redeem their rights as complete human beings and not as a half ---that is the worth of a woman in Moslem communities. Any woman who is capable of doing anything for women in general and Moslem women in particular owes it to the other women who are incapable of defeding themselves and are under men's rule unfortunately.
Congratulations on her success and best of luck on her future endeavors.
