Iranian detainees return to prison after leave


Abdollah Momeni

Prominent Iranian post-election detainees who were temporarily released from prison report back to prison, to serve their prison terms, according to reformist websites.

Abdollah Momnei, spokesman for the student group Danesh Amoukhtegan Organization, was released on a $800, 000 bail on March 7 and was unable to renew the furlough.

Momeni was arrested on June 21 of last year in the headquarters of the Free Citizen in the first days of widespread protests against the re-election of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad as presidents and the start of election disputes which have persisted over the past ten months.

Abdollah Momeni has been sentenced to eight years in prison.


Jahanbakhsh Khanjani

Another prominent detainee, Jahanbakhsh Khanjani, member of opposition leader MirHosein Mousavi’s campaign headquarters and former executive of the Ministry of Interior during the reform government also reported back to prison upon failure to extend his leave.

Khanjani was arrested on June 14 and spent close to four months in solitary confinement. He is sentenced to six years in prison.

On Saturday, Feizollah Arabsorkhi, member of reformist group Mojahedin of the Islamic Revolution of Iran returned to Evin Prison following a five day leave.

Islamic Republic authorities arrested thousands of people following the June 2009 presidential elections in order to put down protests against the disputed re-election of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. Many of these detainees have been sentenced to heavy prison terms whilst some have even been sentenced to execution.
