Iranian Shiite leader wants offices of dead clercis closed

Ayatollah Makarem Shirazi

Senior Iranian Shiite leader, Ayatollah Makarem Shirazi urged the survivors of late Shiite leaders to end the activities of their offices after the clerics pass away.

The conservative cleric Ayatollah Makarem Shirazi claimed that he is issuing this request because of concern for “the reputation of Shiaism” and his deep “sense of duty.”

He maintains that according to Shiite tradition, the offices of leaders that pass away are shut down.

He adds that he would honour the decision to continue the work of these offices but is concerned that such activities could result is disputes and tensions.

He also revealed that in his own will, he has given clear instructions to close down all his provincial offices.

A Shiite scholar cleric who publishes a book of instructions for people according to his interpretation of Islamic concepts and provisions can have a following, and his followers can refer to him and his writings in various life situations for guidance.

Some Shiite leaders continue to have a following in various regions of Iran even after their death.

Most recently prominent dissident cleric, Ayatollah Hoseinali Montazeri, one of the most outspoken critics of the Islamic Republic passed away.

The comments of the conservative Shiite leader, Ayatollah Makarem Shirazi could be an attempt to close the door on years of opposition activities from the offices of Ayatollah Montazeri who, despite being churned away by the establishment and suffering years of house arrest, had significant power in rallying opposition forces.
