Larijani emphasizes independence of Iranian judiciary

Following his visit with a number of Iranian Shiite leaders in Qom, Sadegh Larijani, Iran’s head of the judiciary declared that money and position will not grant people impunity in Iranian courts and the judiciary will process judicial matters independent from “political squabbles and media publicity.”

These comments came a day after Ayatollah Makarem Shirazi spoke out against external influences on the judiciary and insisted that judges and court sentences must remain completely independent from people in positions of power as well as those with high financial means.

He also emphasized that media publicity should not be allowed to influence the decisions of judges.

Over a month ago, certain media reports declared pronouncements by Ayatollah Makarem Shirazi were the basis for the approval of a 20-year-old student’s death sentence.

Ayatollah Makarem Shirazi reacted to the reports right away by denying having made such a pronouncement and accusing the media of creating false publicity. His statement on his site read: “We have absolutely not made a pronouncement regarding this individual and this incident reveals the misconduct of certain internet sites. By the grace of God, you will follow the principles of Islam and refrain from making hasty judgments.”
