Karroubi says Iranian authorities in fear of spreading movement

Opposition leader, Mehdi Karroubi says the Islamic Republic fears the spread of the Green Movement; therefore, it is fearful of “every single one of the people.”

The growing confrontation of the government with people reveals the “spreading influence” of the Green Movement in all social strata, Mehdi Karroubi told a group of students and graduates of Tehran University’s School of News.

He maintained that in view of the growing influence of the Green Movement, the government is intent on “inculcating the idea of defeat” in public minds.

Addressing the authorities, Karroubi said: “Mistreatment, oppression, torture and abuse can never be wiped from people’s minds.”

The former speaker of the parliament also advised Green Movement supporters to avoid “emotional outbursts and attacks on the structure of the regime.”

He stressed: “All of us, side by side, should push the Movement ahead by focused persistence on free elections and unconditional execution of the Constitution.”

Last week, Mehdi Karroubi also described the government’s mistreatment of political prisoners a sign of the establishment’s “fear of all popular movements.”

Mehdi Karroubi and MirHosein Mousavi were the two opponents of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad who disputed his victory in the 2009 presidential elections. The two opposition leaders announced that the victory was achieved through vote rigging and they have vowed to fight the consequent government through every legal channel.

Mehdi Karroubi’s political party, National Trust Party, and its newspaper by the same name have been both banned by the Islamic Republic authorities.

Despite continued pressure on him and his family, Karroubi has vowed to continue advocating the cause of election protesters.
