Islamic Republic confirms two death sentences

International Campaign for Human Rights in Iran reports that Iran's judiciary has reportedly confirmed the execution sentences of two post-election detainees.

Nasim Ghanavi, defense attorney for Jafar Kazemi, informed the Campaign that his client, along with another detainee, MohammadAli HajAghai, have been handed the death sentence.

Nasim Ghanavi added that she has had no access to her client and was not even informed of the preliminary sentencing of the court.

The International Campaign for Human Rights in Iran condemns the “hasty and secretive” sentencing of the two detainees and describes the whole procedure as “a blatant violation of international standards of justice.”

A spokesman for the Campaign, Hadi Ghaemi, maintains that the judges of the appeals court are in effect “ignoring and disrespecting” the laws of the country as well as Iran’s international commitments.

Iranian judiciary had previously announced that 11 post-election detainees had been sentenced to execution and the appellate court had approved many of these sentences.

MohammadReza Ali-Zamani and Arash Rahmanipour were executed last year by the Islamic Republic charged with involvement in the post-election events.

Human rights groups claim these executions have no legal justification and are merely used as a scare tactic to deter people from engaging in peaceful street protests.

Last week, Iranian opposition leaders invited people to join street protests on June 12, the anniversary of the disputed 2009 presidential elections.
