Iran bans political activity of reformist parties

The two top reformist Iranian parties, Islamic Iran Participation Front and Mojahedin of Islamic Revolution Organization are banned from political activity as the judiciary confirmed that they have cancelled their permit for political activity.

The Islamic Iran Participation Front organization had filed a complaint against the decision of the Political Parties Commission in March to withdraw their permit. However, Tehran Prosecutor, Abbas Jafari Dowlatabadi announced that the Commission’s decision was upheld by the judiciary.

Tehran Prosecutor also added that the Commission's request to dissolve the two parties has been sent to the Revolutionary Court.

The two organizations endorsed the opponents of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad in the 2009 elections.

The members of Islamic Iran Participation Front and Mojahedin of Islamic Revolution are some of the most prominent reformists in Iranian politics. Many of them were arrested and given prison terms following the controversial presidential elections of 2009.

Iranian opposition contends that the government carried out a widespread fraud to ensure the re-election of Ahmadienjad and their protests against this alleged fraud in the past year has caused turmoil in the ranks of the Islamic Republic.

The reformists who are also prominent figures in the history of the Islamic Republic have become targets of vilification by hardliners and the establishment has made every effort in defaming them by accusing them of foreign ties.
