Attacks on reformist cleric slammed by Zahra Rahnavard

Zahra Rahnavard

Iranian opposition leader, Zahra Rahnavard condemned the attacks on Ayatollah Sanei’s offices which she described as a “scare tactic” to control the presence of senior Shiite leaders in Iranian society.

She maintained that the attack reveals the “defeat of the ruling parties” in the past year adding that they are now trying to “radicalize the political atmosphere” of the religious city of Qom.

In her latest announcement published on Kaleme website, she condemned the violations committed against the senior members of the clergy which she says has been repeated in the past year against other reformist clerics such as Ayatollah Dastgheyb.

Last week pro-government forces attacked Ayatollah Sanei’s office in Qom vandalizing the building and writing grafitti against the reformist cleric on the walls.

The office of the late Ayatollah Montazeri was also attacked on this day in Qom.

In the past months, the offices of Ayatollah Sanei in Qom, Mashhad, Tehran and other major cities were also attacked by government supporters.

Ayatollah Sanei is one of the most outspoken critics of the Islamic Republic. He is known as the reformist Shiite leader for his progressive views on religious matters especially on issues concerning women’s rights.

In the 2009 presidential elections, he supported chief Mahmoud Ahmadinejad opponent, MirHosein Mousavi and he has repeatedly condemned the government’s violent oppression of election protesters in the past year.

The conservative faction of the clergy has tried to question Ayatollah Sanei’s qualifications as a source of emulation for Shiite followers.
