Families of Iranian detainees stage protest

Families of the 16 Iranian detainees that have started a hunger strike, gathered in front of Tehran Prosecutor’s office this morning.

RAHANA reports that families of Hosein Nourinejad, Bahmad Ahmad Amouyi, Ali Tajernia, Ali Parviz, Massoud Bastani and about another 60 people were present in the gathering but many of them were scattered due to intervention of the security forces.

The 16 detainees who have gone on hunger strike are currently in solitary confinement. They have started the hunger strike in protest to being mistreated by prison officials in the substandard conditions of section 350 of Evin Prison.

The families of these prisoners have also written to Tehran Prosecutor, Abbas Jafari Dowlatabadi to inform him of their concern for the well-being of their kin in Evin Prison.

In the past year thousands of people have been arrested to quell the protests against Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s re-election which protesters claim was fraudulent. Many of these detainees have received heavy sentences which include execution, exile and long prison terms.
