Iran makes two arrests in connection with Zahedan suicide attacks

Mohammad Rouzbeh, Zahedan Prosecutor announced that they have arrested two suspects in connection with the July 15 suicide attacks in Zahedan.

Zahedan Prosecutor did not release any further details about the arrests, according to ISNA.

On July 15, two suicide attacks in the Grand Mosque of Zahedan left 27 people dead and over 300 people injured.

Ali Abdolahi, Deputy Interior Minister had also announced earlier that they had arrested a number of “suspects linked to the Zahedan terrorist attacks.”

Jundollah militant group, which has taken responsibility for the attacks, issued a new announcement refuting the statements of the Ministry of Interior and claiming that they are “spreading lies.”

The announcement states that the Iranian government “is merely trying to show off its face by executing a number of innocent young men and a few people have been arrested in order to be tortured to confess to things they haven’t done.”

Jundollah had issued an earlier statement identifying the two suicide bombers as “Mohammad Rigi and Mojahed Abdolbasset.”

Jundollah is a militant organization that claims to fight for the rights of the minority Sunnis of Iran in the southeast of Iran.

In December, Iran arrested Jundollah leader, Adolmalek Rigi who was recently executed in Evin Prison charged with “enmity against God and corruption.”

Three regional MPs resigned from the Iranian parliament after the attacks in protest to lack of effective government action to establish security in the region.

Iranian opposition has also announced that the government must refrain from responding to this event with “an iron fist” which has exacerbated the hostilities in the region.

Mahmoud Ahmadinejad accused the US and Britain of involvement in the terrorist operations in Sistan-Baluchistan region.

The US, the EU, Britain, France and Italy condemned the Zahedan suicide attacks.
