Iran Speaker of Parliament vows to confront resistance to law

Speaker of Iran's Parliament Ali Larijani

The disputes between Iranian Parliament and government continued as today, Ali Larijani, Speaker of Parliament said those who stand against the law will be confronted.

Mahmoud Ahmadinejad who has in the past threatened not to carry out legislation which he disagreed with, was rebuked yesterday by conservative MP, Ahmad Tavakoli, for inciting disregard for the law.

Ali Larijani went on to say that justice can only be achieved through strict adherence to the law.

He added that bills that have been approved by the Guardian Council must be carried out by the government, if not the government would have to answer for its violations.

The Speaker of Parliament went on to criticize government policies saying: “The Country’s prosperity does not rest in using up its resources, but rather in an efficient government that produces capital. If we keep using up our resources, we will not succeed.”

He also criticized Ahmadinejad policies of handing out cash rewards to his supporters saying: “If our objective is Islamic development, we need to create jobs, not give monthly handouts and say eat so you won’t be hungry. People must enjoy the fruits of their own work.”

Iranian Parliament and government have had several disputes over a number of legislations in the past months. Most recently they disagreed over the details of cutting government subsidies and Mahmoud Ahmadinejad announced on national television that he will not carry out the Parliament’s decision despite its approval by the Guardian Council.
