Karzai says Western efforts in Afghanistan misdirected

President Hamid Karzai

Afghan President Hamid Karzai lashed out against policies of the international community in Afghanistan saying that rather than focusing on the “main centres of terrorism”, they are fighting in the villages of Afghanistan.

classified documents about US war in Afghanistan surfaced on Wikileaks indicates that ISI, Pakistan’s military intelligence supports Taleban.

Speaking to reporters in Kabul, Karzai said: “For years we have said: Do not fight against terrorism in the villages and people’s homes, rather look for terrorism in sanctuaries beyond Afghanistan borders.”

While Karzai did not directly name any specific country, in the past Pakistan has been accused by Afghan officials of supporting insurgents in Afghanistan.

Karzai added: “Although Afghanistan’s international allies have come here to fight terrorism, why is it that they do they not act against those locations where the danger of terrorism is present.”

The Afghan President has called on his Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Security Council to carefully review the close to 90 thousand pages of leaked documents.

Yesterday British Prime Minister, David Cameron urged Pakistan to clarify its stance regarding armed fighters in Afghanistan and Pakistan. He insisted that Pakistan cannot officially act against the Taleban and then secretly support the insurgents.

Pakistan has responded to the growing international mistrust towards itself by saying that these statements are non-constructive and damage the region's long term peace efforts.
