Farahani called back to prison after signing petition

Mohsen Safai Farahani

Iranian judiciary cancelled Mohsen Safai Farahani’s leave from prison today after his participation in petition against Iranian intelligence authorities.

Opposition websites report that Farahani, senior member of the reformist group, Islamic Iran Participation Front, told the authorities if need be, he will return to prison but would not take back his complaint.

Seven senior members of Iran’s two main reformist groups sent a letter to Iran’s head of judiciary, Ayatollah Larijani and head of judicial branch of the armed forces, Mohammad Kazem Bahrami to accuse a group of military and intelligence officials for their alleged “illegal interference” in the 2009 presidential elections.

The reformists contend that based on an audio file which has emerged in recent months, an individual going by the name of “Commander Moshfeq” at Sarallah Base of Iran’s Revolutionary Guards outlines the steps taken by Iran’s armed and intelligence forces to interfere in the elections and consequently to suppress the protests against the ballot fraud.

MirHosein Mousavi and Mehdi Karroubi, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s opponents in the 2009 presidential elections, have challenged Ahmadinejad’s victory and accuse the Revolutionary Guards of interfering in the election process.

The government however rejects these allegations and maintains that the opposition is trying to topple the regime by fomenting unrest.

Mohsen Safai Farahani was arrested on June 20 of last year in the wave of arrests following the presidential elections and sentenced to six years in prison.

He was temporarily released on bail in February of 2010.
