Iranian reformist party, Islamic Iran Participation Front, calls on Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani, Chairman of Iran's Expediency Council to “create and establish a fact finding committee to find the roots and tell the truth about the events of the past year and half” in the country.

In the past year and a half, following the controversial re-election of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad in the summer of 2009, his opponents in the presidential campaign along with millions of people across the country protested against vote fraud.

The government responded to peaceful demonstrations and demands for a recount with extreme violence on the streets against demonstrators and it has continued to arrest thousands of people including many members of the Participation Front. In addition, scores of newspapers as well as the reformist parties have been shut down and Islamic Iran Participation Front has even been dissolved by the order of the judiciary.

Norooz website reports that the Islamic Iran Participation Front has addressed the letter to the Chairman of the Expediency Council because they claim no other government body responds to their complaints.

They urge Hashemi Rafsanjani to use his “intrinsic and historic” position in the Islamic Republic to save the country by establishing an impartial committee to investigate the allegations of fraud in the elections with consideration for “contentions of both parties in the matter.”

They also call for a probe into the deaths of “about one hundred people” and injuries of “thousands of people” on the streets of the country as well as Kahrizak Prison where post-elections detainees were tortured and even killed, and also the raid on Tehran University dorm where students were beaten and abused.

The reformist party goes on to demand an investigation of the harsh treatment of detainees currently in prison and the interference of security and intelligence forces in the responsibilities of the judiciary.

The Participation Front calls on Ayatollah Rafsanjani to charge to the committee also with a probe into “the military takeover of the economy” and “the destructive economic policies of the government" and find a solution to lead the country out of its “current crisis” and “to recover the trust between the people and the government.”

Islamic Iran Participation Front endorsed MirHosein Mousavi in the 2009 presidential elections and currently many of its senior members are behind bars charged with “activities against national security and propaganda against the system.”
