Soar in Iranian airfare apporved by Ahmadinejad

After controversy over the legality of the recent jump in the price of Iranian flights, it was announced that Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has approved the sudden rise.

Mehr news agency reports that in a meeting of the president’s office, with representatives of the ministries of commerce and transportation, it was revealed that the increase was approved by the president through regular correspondence.

Airline tickets have jumped 30 percent since two weeks ago and some had challenged the legality of such a sudden rise in the price of airfare.

A similar leap in prices two years ago was challenged by critics and the official complaint filed against the move remains in an undetermined state.

The increase in the price of airline tickets was followed with a similar increase in the price of train fares. Both rises were triggered in anticipation of the cutting of government subsidies which is expected to translate into a sudden rise in the price of gasoline as well as the cost of other forms of energy and food staples.
