Mortazavi under investigation by Iranain judiciary

Iranian judiciary announced that the charges against the three suspended judges in connection with the violations committed at Kahrizak Detention Centre are under investigation.

Iranian Labour News Agency reports that the authorities have indicated that the case against Tehran’s former prosecutor, Saeed Mortazavi and the other two judges is now in preliminary stages of investigation.

Saeed Mortazavi, former Tehran prosecutor, has been accused of involvement in sending post-election protesters to Kahrizak Prison where they were abused and at least three died under torture.

Saeed Mortazavi who is a staunch Ahmadinejad supporter has been said to enjoy immunity from prosecution which appears to be gradually cracking under the persistence of protests against the violent treatment of peaceful protesters in the past year and a half.

A number of prison authorities were prosecuted by the authorities in connection with the deaths at Kahrizak prison and two were sentenced to death. The families of the victims issued a public statement announcing that while they release the two prison guards from their death sentence, they call for the prosecution of the main perpetrators of the events “who are beginning to lose their official and unofficial immunities.”

The opposition insists that Saeed Mortazavi is the main culprit in the Kahrizak crimes and call for his prosecution.

Mortazavi was removed from his position as Tehran’s prosecutor after the outcry against the Kahrizak events but Mahmoud Ahmadinejad immediately gave him another position as the head of the Task Force against Smuggling.
