Supreme Leader: Post-election events aimed at conquering Iran

Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Khamenei says in the election turmoil of last year, “the true perpetrators of the unrest were trying to conquer the country.”

In a speech to a group of students on the occasion of the National Student’s Day, Ayatollah Khamenei once more commended the occupation of the US embassy in 1979 by Iranian students and added: “We must always keep the fact that the US is never after normal relations with other countries in our mind; they are only after a kind of master and peasant relationship and want to plunder the interests of other nations.”

Iran’s Supreme Leader told his audience that those who chanted slogans in contradiction of this event last year were after reviving US interests in Iran.

Last year, Iranian election protesters took advantage of the national demonstrations for the National Students Day to express their protests against the alleged fraud in the re-election of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad in June of 2009.

Ayatollah Khamenei once more referred to the post-election protests as “sedition” and maintained that the future will reveal “the dangerous conspiracy that was at its root.”

He claimed that many people became tools of this “sedition, and inadvertently moved toward the objectives that the enemies had aimed for.”

MirHosein Mousavi and Mehdi Karroubi, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s opponents in the 2009 presidential election maintain that he was elected through vote rigging and deny the legitimacy of his government. While the establishment insists that they are working in the interests of Iran’s enemies, the opposition leaders maintain that they are in effect concerned for the integrity of the Islamic Republic system and their demands are within the framework of the regime.
