Iranian parliament challenges Ahmadinejad government

Ali Larijani, head of Iran’s parliament says that he is ready to “confront the government through legal channels” if they refuse to send their legislation to the parliament for review.

The head of the parliament told ILNA that “according to the constitution, government legislation has to be relayed to the parliament to assure correspondence with the law. But it is a while now that this has not been done and this is a blatant breach of law.”

Iranian MPs say that since last March, the government has not sent its new legislation to the parliament.

ILNA reporter asked Ali Larijani if he will summon Mahmoud Ahmadinejad to the parliament but the speaker of the parliament maintained that it is not yet time for such an action.

Some MPs have suggested that if the government continues to refrain from providing the parliament with its legislation, the president should be summoned to the parliament.

In the meantime, the president’s parliamentary deputy has denied the allegation by the MPs and said that they are indeed delivering the new legislation to parliament before execution.

Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has been in dispute with the legislative branch of the government on many occasions in the past year.
