Rigths group says Iran leader responsible for Karroubi's life

Ayatollah Khamenei, Iran's Supreme Leader

Following repeated attacks on Mehdi Karroubi’s home, International Campaign for Human Rights in Iran announced today that Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Khamenei, is responsible for the life of the opposition leader and his family.

Hadi Ghaemi, spokesperson for the Campaign for Human Rights said: “It is unacceptable that dozens of plainclothes agents, armed with guns, tear gas, and other weapons, had free reign to terrorize Karroubi’s family without any interruption from the police.”

Ghaemi maintains that the manner in which these attackers have acted leaves no doubt that the Iranian government has orchestrated these attacks.

He also added that these attacks also reveal the complete failure of the judiciary in Iran.

Ghaemi urged the international community to “strongly condemn these actions by the Iranian government and demand that the government refrain from sanctioning such criminal acts.”

According to Ghaemi: “The attacks on Karroubi’s family are another sign of the fast erosion of rule of law and the urgency of holding the Iranian government responsible for its human rights violations.”

Hossein Karroubi, son of the opposition leader has told the Campaign that these attacks are a way of completely isolating his father from the public and the media. He also added that there is no point in filing a complaint since the attacks have already been coordinated by the government and the security forces.

Mehdi Karroubi’s home has been attacked repeatedly in the past five nights by a mob of pro-government forces. The violent crowd also gathered in front of his home Friday morning to prevent him from attending the Qods Day events as he had promised.
