Five Ashura Day detainees may face death penalty

Five people arrested in the protests of Ashura Day, December 27, have been charged by Iranian judiciary with “moharebeh” or armed activities against national security. The charge is punishable by death in Iran.

Iranian media announced that the indictment for the five individuals has been prepared based on “reports from officers, completion of investigations and explicit confessions of the accused.”

Earlier, Iran’s Head of Judiciary, Gholamhosein Mohsein Ejei had announced the imminent execution of three detainees of Ashura Day.

On December 27, Iranian election protesters, who claim Mahmoud Ahmadinejad was fraudulently elected in June, once more staged demonstrations during the customary time of Shiite mourning on Ashura Day. Over 500 people were reportedly arrested and eight were killed on this day.

Since Ashura Day events, the government has started a new wave of arrests. Scores of political and social activists have been detained in recent days.

Tehran Prosecutor announced that “burning public property” will be considered a form of “moharabeh.”

36 lawmakers have proposed a reduction in the waiting period to execute a death sentence in the case of those convicted of “moharebeh.”

Iran Interior Minister also announced last week that from now on, people trying to join the street demonstrations will be considered as “mohareb.”

So the Islamic Republic is assembling the execution machinery for election protesters as its fiercest tool for putting down the protests which, despite all State efforts, have refused to die down in the past seven months.
